Bishop Cabinets

In the past we spoke about "Bishop Cabinets", they are a semi-custom framed cabinet line. Bishop cabinets makes a beautiful product as well as being a pleasure to deal with. At Regal Kitchens we absolutly love how they stand behind their product. We have been dealing with them almost as long as they have been around. From what I understand we were actually their 21st customer. Here I Quote from there newsletter written by Jim Sr. the President of the company:
"As we look at what most cabinet companies are doing during these times, it seems that many have slowed or eliminated their advertising, and that most have really slowed down their R&D and new product releases. Even the ones who talk about continuing to progress seem to bring up things that they did a year ago. Since most companies are laden with debt, their decisions to slow down these aspects of their businesses make sense. But because we are debt free, our position is a bit different and we would do ourselves and our customers an injustice if we adopted the same mindset. We are investing in the future, and taking advantage of the time available to get more of the things we want to add to our line introduced than we could during busier times.

I've mentioned this before, but one of the benefits of reduced demand has been the reduction in production hours from frequent 60 hour weeks to 40 hour weeks. Since our staff was used to 10-hour days anyway, we changed our production to four 10-hour shifts. That has allowed us to use the free time to test and train. For example, the biggest single production day of full access cabinetry so far occurred this week. Most full access cabinets to this point had been assembled by the production managers, and they had started bringing in some of the production employees to watch what was going on. This week, they started letting some of those employees get "hands on", under their direct supervision. Instead of trying to train these employees in boom times, when they would have been trying to learn while tired from an already long work day, we are able to train them while they are fresh, and to pick and choose who will get trained when."

Basically they have been working for the past three years on expanding into framless, with foils, wood, metals, it`s just an amazing new line that I am fascinated by. Below I posted one of their video clips, of them introducing the new framless line. Hopefully next week I will talk more about them as A company and what they represent.

Self Edge Counter Tops

In yesterdays blog post, we talked about the different Post form tops we stock here at "Regal Kitchens", as well as the choice in different post form styles. Today I would like to discuss "Self Edge" counter tops. In post form we are very limited to the different colors available, as well as the different styles(post form is a style in itself). If you look to at the picture on the left you will see that there are so many cuts going every which way. The advantage of self edge counter tops over post form tops, besides for the customization, is that the "laminate comes in a little thicker grade material. The post form laminate is a little thinner, since the back splash and counter are all one piece, so the laminate has to be able to bend to cover it all. Now on the self edge top can have a bull nose edge or any other edge, but since we will be bending the laminate, we would have to use the thinner laminate for the self edge.
The post form comes in 10 foot lengths or 12 foot lengths, already glued to the wood, all the warehouse has to do is just cut it down to the appropriate sizes, and then finish the edges are properly. In self edge, the laminate comes in sheets of 4 foot x 8 foot, and we have to glue it to the wood, and fabricate the entire counter from scratch, which is obviously a little more time consuming.
Below are links to our laminate suppliers to view a full selection of colors available.
Wilsonart

Formica

Pionite

Post Form Counter Tops

When it comes to counter tops as simple as it looks, there are so many variations of fabrication and styles. We at "Regal Kitchens" carry pretty much all of them. Like we mentioned in the past the most common counter tops we supply are Granite, and Laminate counters. In the "Laminate" we have what`s called "Self Edge", and we have "Post form". The most common difference between "Post form" and "Self Edge" is that the back splash and the counter are all one piece of laminate in the "Post form". I would like to go through today all the differences in the post form tops.
Crescent - Crescent is A high quality profile counter top edged with a 90º radius on it`s front. The Crescent back splash is raised 3 3/4" above deck and finished with a 90º radius. Crescent is one of the most popular post form counter top design installed in today's economical times. This counter is made of Pressed Wood.
Mercury - Mercury is A rounded modern looking counter top with A 1/2" radius on the top and bottom of it`s front edge. A 3" seamless back splash flows continuous to the top deck where it ends with a 90º radius. The neat look of this classic top, compliments the appearance of relatively any kitchen. This counter is made of Pressed Wood.
Pluto - Pluto is a very durable plywood counter top, finished with a 90º front edge. This front edge is raised with an additional no drip bump to prevent water fall. A 3 3/4" back splash extends above deck. Pluto adds the quality necessary for the most frequently used kitchens. Pluto is made with water resistant plywood that will protect your counter top for a long time.
In certain layouts post form is not recommended, but still offered. When you have a "L-Shape" kitchen, because the laminate is all one piece you have to make the seam on the angle(see the circled diagram below).

See below brochure for the available color options in Post form.

Tomorrow I would like to go into "Self Edging".

Nat Wood

Going back to the beginning when we discussed the different cabinet door styles, there is another door style that we @ "Regal Kitchens" are a big dealer of, it`s called "Nat Wood". "Nat Wood" comes in three different colors, "Honey", "Pickled", "Cherry". Honey is our biggest seller, it`s probably the most inexpensive cabinet we carry. It`s A framed all plywood box cabinet with raised panel standard overlay concealed hinge beech doors. Wall cabinetry will be arched and base cabinetry will be square. The following are the Cabinet specs:
• Solid Beech face Frames.
• Beech raised panel door.
• Veneered over MDF center panel.
• Beech grained plywood sides.
• 1/2" reinforced plywood bottoms.
• 1/2" reinforced plywood backing.
• 3/4" hardwood plywood shelving.
• Finished plywood toe kicks.
• Plywood drawer sides.
• Fully 110º adjustable hinges.
• Epoxy coated drawer sides for a smooth glide action.
• Finger pull profiled within door construction.
Now I personally think that a "Finger Pull" is not the greatest invention. The reason is that when you keep on touching the doors with dirty hands it may get ruined over time, but it is definitely a nice way to save money , especially if the kitchen cabinet door comes with it.

Going over 160-13O

I would like to go over another layout now in it`s entirety and review all points. This kitchen we actually installed yesterday. The following items are all given written straight out on the layout.
• All the way on top we see that the cabinet style the customer is using is "Classic Round"(thermofoil).
• The color he is using it in is "White Matte".
• The counter Regal Kitchens did not supply.
• The knobs are Cliffside Industries model # 100-SS.
• This kitchen is 123" wide from wall to wall.
We also saw previously that cabinets generally run in 3" increments, obviously we made some custom sizes here. We also supplied the following for the customer:
• LG Microwave model # LMV1314W.
• Kohler sink model # K3325.
Kohler faucet model # K15160PC.
The rest of the appliances and counter was supplied by the customer.
On the right we started off with a filler because there is a window there. Obviously the only drawer in this kitchen is the B20(custom made, not a 3" increment), but if you want a sink, dishwasher, refrigerator, and stove(20" pretty common in NYC apartments), you have to give a little t make it fully operational.

Summing up the layout

I think from our previous posts(here, here, here, and here)I was able to give you a brief description of whats going on in the layout. Below is the actual proposal and layout(name and price taken out), that we supplied to the company. You will see it`s extremely straight forward with very little(if any) lee way for error.

So to summarize it all. We measured the kitchen for the customer, sent him the above layout and proposal. We installed the kitchen, supplied and installed the customer with the following:
1)Jim Bishop Richmond Deluxe kitchen cabinets.
2)Cliffside Industries model number 100-SS silver satin cabinet knobs.
3)U-Line model # 2175RF “Stainless Steel” 24” under counter refrigerator.
4)Avanti model # DG201BS “Black with Stainless Steel” 20” stove.
5)GE model # JVM1750SS 30” wide ”Stainless Steel” over the range microwave.
6)Kohler model # K15160PC single lever pullout spray “Chrome” faucet.
7)Kohler model # K3330 14” X 15 ¾” single bowl stainless steel under mount sink.
8)Set of Plumbing parts.
9)Set of Gas Parts.
The counter top was done by the owner, the customer ordered his own granite. I am trying to get hold of a picture of this kitchen completed, just to give you, instead of getting it through Regal Kitchens an idea of whats going on, I will post it as soon as I get my hands on it.

Reading A Layout Part 4

This is part 4 and the final blog post on how to read a layout. When we go into an apartment to measure a kitchen, we take all measurements, this way if we change a layout, and decide to put an appliance on a wall that we initially did not think we would when we first measured. we would have all wall sizes. When measuring, we measure "everything"(like we mentioned earlier here), that includes all pipes, electrical outlets, switches, phone jacks, door bells, and anything else you will come across in the kitchens(there are others that are pretty common in NYC apartment buildings that I hope to go into in the near future.
On the layout you will see a list of owner notes, as well as a list of Installer notes(notes are pretty much self explanatory).

When we list the owner notes, those are items that the property manager/contractor would have to take care of, before the kitchen is installed. The Installer notes, are items that need to get done by the installer, weather it`s Regal Kitchens doing the installation, or the customer doing it on their own. You the customer will now have all instructions sitting on your desk without even having to go to the job site, you know exactly what has to get done, and can properly manage it from the comfort of your office chair.

Reading A Layout Part 3

We understand from our previous blog post on Friday how to read the layout and what cabinets are in the kitchen. Sunday we learned how to read what fillers and panels are being supplied. Now I would like to go into why we are using fillers, when we can use that space to fit bigger kitchen cabinets.
On the top part of the drawing you will see it says 65 1/2" that is representing the width of the kitchen. Stock cabinets run in 3" increments. So if we have a 30" wide Cabinet, and a 33" wide cabinet in the kitchen, you are left with 2 1/2". A tip that we learned here with experience is, we at Regal Kitchens have yet to come across a straight wall in the NYC apartment buildings we deal with. That being said it is possible that on top this kitchen was 66", and lower down it was 65 1/2", there is no way you can chance putting in 66" worth of cabinets. The fillers on the other hand come in 3" increments as well, so that can be cut down to whatever width is needed.
On the bottom of the drawing you will see(where I circled) more fillers.

The first one WF3X30 is to cut down and to put flush with the bottom of the cabinets to close the gap on bottom between the wall and cabinet. Scribe molding is a thin 1" wide molding that basically you can put anywhere there are gaps. i will hopefully go into greater detail in the upcoming posts and come back and put a link to it here. Tomorrow I would like to go through the owner notes, and then just sum it all up.

Reading A Layout Part 2

Now that we learned from yesterdays post how to see from the layout what cabinets are being supplied. Lets see the rest of the layout. Starting on the wall cabinets first, all the way to the left it says WF 1 1/2", which stands for "Wall Filler" 1 1/2" wide. Now all the way to the right it says "WEP 1"x42", stands for "Wall End Panel" 1" wide, and 42" high. the reason we put a panel, instead of a filler, and we made it 42" high instead of the 24" high which is what the cabinet is, is because the W3024 cabinet has a Microwave underneath it which is about 18" high. So the 24" cabinet plus the 18" Microwave is 42" high, now the reason we did a panel instead of a filler is because otherwise on the right side it would be hollow between the Microwave and the wall. Down to the Base Cabinets. To the left we started with a DWR 1/2" which stands for "Dish Washer Panel 1 1/2" wide", which we out there since the fridge is there we needed some sort of support for the counter top on the left. Now we also put a "Side Splash" on the left side. Tomorrow I would like explain the various fillers, and panels why we actually use them as well the Owner, and installer notes we use on our layouts.

Reading A Layout Part 1

Lately i`ve been posting layouts of the kitchens we installed on our facebook group. I know I started introducing the different kitchen cabinet door styles that we sell, and then I went off about Jim Bishop Cabinets and some other things(going off topic is an old problem of mine). I think it`s very important to go back to basics. On June 22, 2009 I posted a blog post "Ten Steps to Measuring Your Kitchen", I think I should have mentioned how to read the layouts as well.
Let`s start with an easy layout, that we @ Regal Kitchens just did PO # 160-7S. You will see alot of numbers and letters. Here is the break down. The "W" with numbers to the right of it stands for Wall Cabinet, that will represent the cabinets hanging on the wall. Cabinets staring with A "B" represent the Base Cabinets, which are the cabinets sitting on the floor, and supporting the Counter top. On the Wall Cabinets, the last 2 digits are telling you the height of the cabinet, the first digit(s) is telling you the width of the cabinet. As far as the base cabinets go, all Cabinets are the same height 34 1/2"(unless there is a customization). As far as the width goes, in Base , and Wall cabinets they go in 3 inch increments starting with 9 inches.
I think we are now ready to look at our layout to see what is going on. Starting on the left the first cabinet is A "W3342"(33" wide x 42"high). To the right we have A "W3024" (30" wide x 24"high). Now you might ask why did we not make the cabinets the same height it`s because, we have a 30" Microwave hanging from the cabinet. On the bottom starting on the left we have 24" Under counter Refrigerator(that's right a real small one that fits under the counter and is only 24" wide, to the right of that we have a SB18, which stands for "Sink Base 18", which is 18" wide. To the right of that we have a 20" stove(pretty common in NYC apartment buildings). All in all a pretty small kitchen, for someone that is paying a alot of rent. but that's what goes here in the NYC.

Jim Bishop Martinique

As I said in yesterday`s post I would go through some of the Jim Bishop cabinet door styles. as well as the layout that we used them with.
Today I would like to start with A kitchen that Regal Kitchens just completed.
The door style to the left which we used is called "Martinique", which is part of the "Jim Bishop Essentials" collection. The following is from "Jim Bishop`s" website explaining the difference in their collections.
Essentials are Jim Bishop's fashion collection of time-honored door styles. Square or arched, in four beautiful hardwoods or laminate, and available in a near-endless variety of stains and finishes through our Formal Finishes and Smart Styles programs. Essentials help make selecting the perfect cabinets for your home a most rewarding experience. Design Elements is Jim Bishop's Custom Order program. We created it to satisfy the most discriminating of tastes --Yours! Choose from fine carpentry in traditional Miter, Mortise & Tenon or Slab construction, and a variety of raised or recessed panel styles. Also available: Rustic, the old American farm look that's the latest rage among designers
.
In this particular case we installed this kitchen on the "Upper West Side" of Manhattan. It was A "Framed all plywood box “Martinique Deluxe” cabinetry with square raised panel concealed hinge “Maple” full overlay doors in the “Natural Stain”, with A low splash "Luna Pearl" counter that A 180º profile. Below is the layout of the kitchen.
